In the practice of astrology compatibility in relationships, or compatibility in any kind of partnership, is one of the matters most often enquired about of astrologers. We seek fulfilment in many areas of life, but if our relationships are unsatisfactory, it seems that lack of compatibility within them can influence the whole of our experience.

To discover the reasons for this we may need to ask why we are here! As I read more of the religions and philosophies that have guided people through the ages, the central theme appears to be that if we find ourselves we find the divine heart of the universe. Relationships are one of the fundamental scenarios in which self-discovery happens, for when we get close to someone, that person holds up a mirror for us in which to see ourselves more clearly. What if we don't like what we see? We may say the quality we don't like is a characteristic of the other person, when all he/she is doing is holding up a mirror so we can see it in ourselves. Then we say there is a compatibility issue between us.

Astrology can help you if you are experiencing compatibility issues in a relationship by first of all examining your horoscope or birth chart. The chart will show the qualities with which you most easily identify. A chart dominated by planets in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) for instance may show that you identify with cool mental detachment as a preferred quality. You may form an easy relationship with another with similar chart qualities, but are more likely to be attracted to someone who identifies with more visceral emotional qualities as preferable, and whose birth chart may be dominated by planets in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The other set of opposites is fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) - a man, say, with his head in the clouds drawn to an earth goddess with her feet firmly on the ground!

Emphasis of element in your horoscope is not the only way of showing the qualities with which you tend to identify. Prominence of certain planets will also show this, especially any that were near the Ascendant, or rising, at the time of your birth. Mars might seek Venus, Jupiter might seek Saturn or perhaps Mercury. Planets near the Descendant, or setting, at the time of birth will show the kind of energy to which you are drawn.

What you may discover is that you are drawn to and excited by people who exhibit qualities you reject within yourself. The pain of being drawn like a magnet to someone with whom compatibility seems impossible can be intense, but it can also be the catalyst for greater self love and acceptance, which in turn can lead to unimaginable fulfilment in relationships.

Astrology can help by identifying the qualities with which you most easily identify and by shedding light on the ways in which they work in your life. Comparison with the chart of another with whom you are in relationship will show the areas of life where your preferred qualities clash with those of your partner. The astrologer can gently guide you as a couple in seeing how each stirs up the qualities denied by the other, and suggest, with the help of the charts, constructive ways of handling these so that greater compatibility may be experienced.
