Introduction

It can be rather disconcerting to be told, in a report such as this, that ‘you are assertive, outgoing and courageous’ when it seems very clear to you that you are not any of those! This report is not a seamless text. Rather, it is a collection of delineations of features of your birth chart such as planets in signs, planets in houses and aspects between planets. The challenge in writing the delineations that make up this report has been to put them together in such a way that clarity is given to contradictions. If, for instance, Mars in your birth chart is closely associated with both Jupiter and Saturn, then boldness and timidity are both likely to feature. However in most cases I have not written a delineation that takes account of both associations within a single portion of text. In the case of aspects between planets a numerical value for the strength of the aspects is given. Where delineations appear contradictory you will probably notice that the aspect with the greater strength is more noticeable in your life. (As a general rule a strength of 4 or more is strong, less than 2 is weak.) Also, if you read the descriptions of the sign and house positions of each planet, you should recognise the areas in your life where each of the apparently contradictory traits operates. In a few cases the same delineation may appropriately appear in two different place in your report, and in such cases you may see it repeated.

This report has two principle aims.

1.) To help you to recognise that your temperament and personality traits are just fine the way that they are - you do not need to change them. Over the years, I have found that one of the main benefits clients gain from a consultation is the relief that their personality traits are confirmed by their birth charts. For instance, someone who prefers to make decisions based on a kind of ‘gut instinct’ may look on with envy at someone who prefers a more rational or ‘common sense’ approach. An introvert surrounded by extroverts may feel under pressure to change, as if introversion was an inferior way of being. The birth chart can recognise these traits and affirm their validity.

2.) To help you, given that your temperament is as it is, to recognise patterns in your life that may be holding you back from all that you have it in you to be. Such recognition may help you to make choices about how you live your life that will result in breaking through those patterns. I hope you will also find in the report indications as to sources of help for the challenges you face.

In pursuit of these aims I have constructed this report according to a sequence that should guide you into greater depth as it proceeds. The components of the sequence will be described briefly here and in greater detail during the report:

1.) Ascendant or Rising Sign and its Ruler

This is the zodiacal sign that was rising at the moment of your birth. It says much about what primarily motivates you in life, which may have to do, for instance, with freedom of expression or with the meeting of physical or emotional needs. Together with planets aspecting the ascendant, planets in the 1st house (about to rise at birth) and the planet ruling the ascendant, this traditionally shows the quality of what might be called your ‘life force’.

2.) The Moon

This shows how you instinctively respond to events in your day to day life, and where you wish to escape to when taking time off from your main purpose in life. It shows where you seek safety and security. Together with the Ascendant it is the main indicator of temperament.

3.) The Sun

In contrast with the Ascendant and the Moon, this shows where some conscious effort is normally required in order to find and fulfil your purpose in life. This does not come instinctively, it has to be worked for, and you will not feel complete without it.

4.) The Planets

Together with the Sun and the Moon each of these is a significator for some tangible or experiential aspect of your life. Throughout this report reference to planets may include the Sun and the Moon unless the context indicates otherwise.

Each planet in your chart falls in a sign and in a house. The sign in which a planet is placed influences the way in which it acts in your chart. The house shows the area in your life, e.g. money, relationships and career, in which it operates. In addition to the house in which a planet falls, that planet may rule one or more other houses, linking the matters governed by those houses with the house in which the planet is placed. I go into more detail about this towards the end of this report.

Each planet is considered dignified (well-placed) in certain signs and debilitated (poorly placed) in others. The two principal levels of dignity are rulership and exaltation, those of debility are detriment and fall. A dignified planet will add benefit to the matters of the house in which it is placed and to that which it rules. A debilitated planet will make the matters of those houses more challenging. If a planet has any of these four levels of dignity or debility in the sign in which it falls, I will say so in this report.

In addition, each planet may form an aspect with one or more other planets, indicating ways in which these planets could work together to your advantage, or where you may have to struggle to reconcile different experiences in your life. The major aspects are the sextile, square, trine and opposition. Minor aspects also covered in this report are the semi-square and the sesquiquadrate. A planet may also be conjunct, that is, close to, another. As mentioned above, this report will indicate the strength of each aspect in your chart. Any score of 4 or more is strong, less than 2 is weak, but do not ignore any of them.

Libra Ascendant

In an age in which one’s Sun sign is pedalled as of over-riding importance, as indicated by the preponderance of Sun sign columns in popular newspapers and magazines, it may seem strange not to start this report with a description of yours. The reason is that your ascendant says something far more basic about you than does your Sun sign. It describes your primary motivation in life. Some people, having a fire sign (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius) rising, are motivated primarily by the desire for freedom of action; others, having an air sign (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius) rising by the desire for freedom of movement; others, having an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn) rising by the need for physical security; others, having a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces) rising, by the need for emotional security. Planets aspecting the ascendant or in the 1st house, especially any in the same sign as the ascendant, influence the primary motivation. The planet that rules your ascendant shows, by its sign and house position, the way in which you attempt to achieve your primary motivation. It does not make sense to look at your Sun sign until we have looked at what motivates you at a more instinctive level. That is why we will even look at your Moon before we look at your Sun (unless your Ascendant is Leo in which case the Sun is your chart ruler).

Your Ascendant is Libra, an air sign, indicating a strong desire for freedom of expression and movement. More than most, you need other people to motivate you. They do this by providing a mirror in which you can see yourself reflected, or by providing a standpoint in contrast to which you can define your own. When a decision is required you are inclined to sit on the fence weighing the pros and cons, perhaps being unsure what you really want. You may gasp with admiration at people who make up their minds quickly, knowing exactly what they want and wasting no time in going about getting it. You may attract such a person for an intimate relationship. Although you are more concerned about being in relationship than most, that doesn’t mean that relationships are easy for you. Having an air sign rising you may find that being close to someone stirs up feelings within you that have lain dormant since childhood and which you find difficult to live with. The depth of feeling which others show may fascinate you, but your own feelings may be characterised more by intensity than by depth, with a longing to be able to feel at home with such depth.

You can always see both sides of a coin. When someone presents a point of view to you your instinct is to see the value in the opposing point of view, even if you basically agree with the opinion expressed. You can then say ‘yes, but have you thought of [the other viewpoint]’, expressing it with such disarming charm that the other person may have to reconsider. Indeed, charm and a sense of fair play are among your most attractive assets. But your desire to maintain harmony may lead you to make unwise compromises which then shatter the harmony by leading you into frustration. Listen to others, but stand up for what you believe in.

Libra is ruled by Venus. Venus is therefore your chart ruler and will be described next after aspects to your Ascendant and planets (if any) in your 1st House.

Ascendant sextile Uranus  (Strength:  1.30)

A certain aura of originality, in the way you look, dress or behave, mark you out from the ordinary and may attract others to you who get some sense of excitement in your presence. Those others may find it difficult to get close to you however if you fear intimacy will compromise your need for independence.

Saturn in the First House

Your approach to life, especially in your early years, is a cautious one, arising out of a sensitive nature that is fearful of being hurt. Where the normal human instinct is to actively reach out into life and towards other people you may be reticent about doing this through shyness and sensitivity. Lack of self-esteem could be a major issue. You simply feel inadequate and inferior in relation to other people, probably through an experience of emotional wounding rather than due to any objective standard. Self-control beyond what is appropriate leads to a limited experience of life’s joys, for which willingness to take risks is necessary. On the way to greater confidence in reaching out you may go through a phase of aggressively taking control of situations, as if you consider the best way to defend yourself (which underneath you still consider necessary) is to take the offensive and control others. Such an attempt to control can be very difficult for others to escape from if you are in a position of authority, but when they do and your attempt fails you can be broken and forced to face your underlying sensitivity again. Such experiences could lead you to a realistic understanding of your personality, realising that it is safe to open up to new experiences once you have taken a critical look at them. You can be responsible, reliable and straightforward without being withdrawn and defensive.

Pluto in the First House

The house position of Pluto shows an area of life through which any unresolved emotional conflicts within you are channelled. This can give rise to an obsession with that area and an attempt to control their expression, lest letting go releases pent-up feelings in a way that cannot be handled by the conscious mind. The obsession can have a positive outcome if it is accompanied by working towards greater self-knowledge and acceptance. Deeply ingrained complexes can find an outlet through the matters governed by this house. Matters governed by a faster-moving planet are similarly affected if in aspect with Pluto.

Wherever Pluto is in the chart life can go through periodic changes of such depth that they feel like death to the old and rebirth into something new. With Pluto in the 1st house this experience affects the whole personality. The way you view life, the way others perceive you, and what it is that you seek in and from other people can go through fundamental changes. You can resist these changes if you want to. Your instinctive approach probably will be to resist them because you may have suffered traumatic experiences in your early years which led you to live cautiously. In response to such experiences you adopted a way of life that felt safe and protected you from further distress. When you are called upon in later years to change your approach to life your safety feels threatened and you resist.  It would be helpful if you could stand back and watch yourself resisting! If that sounds strange, try to bear in mind that the self that resists is not your true self but a restricted version of it. If you watch yourself resist you can let go of the resistance and enter a new and more fulfilling phase of life. Your experience of periodic change, or at least the challenge to change, leads you to view life with greater intensity than most, to see beneath the superficial layer of life on which some people live. Life at depth can be a lonely experience, especially in terms of personal relationships where you are reluctant to commit to another because you can see through his or her persona and need to connect at a deeper level. Others may be reluctant to get close to you because they perceive at some level that they cannot get away with anything less than the truth, and they sense you may not be very forgiving of faults. Others find it easier to grow if accepted as they are. In relationships Pluto in the 1st does have a reputation for power games where one partner or the other tries to exercise undue control. This could be due to reluctance to let go of a relationship once one has been formed that offers a deep enough experience. Alternatively it could be due to a fear of re-awakening past painful feelings that a relationship hides as long as nothing changes.

Ascendant Ruler and Dispositor

Libra is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by Venus.

Venus in Capricorn and in the Fourth House

Your Venus sign is indicative of your values and what you appreciate in a person or object. It shows the kind of experiences you seek and tend to meet in relationships and the way you go about interacting with others, and indicates your dress sense. The house occupied by Venus shows an area of life where you seek beauty, pleasure and fulfilment, and which you may value more then others. Planets aspecting Venus influence the qualities that you value or find attractive and the extent to which you actually enjoy them. They also show the kinds of interactions you have in relationships. As ruler of your Ascendant Venus is especially important in your chart.

Realising your motivation for freedom of movement and expression involves giving attention to your home and family. A secure home base, and preferably a good relationship with the family in which you were brought up (even if your parents are no longer alive) will serve you in giving you the freedom you desire in the rest of life.

You benefit from a harmonious home environment and would do well to furnish it beautifully. If you are in a relationship you will want to make your home a comfortable nest for your partner. A loving home background is commonly indicated. Indeed, love for a parent, usually the one of the opposite sex, may be so deep that you have difficulty establishing an independent life, and no partner is able to match up to the qualities of the parent. The same parent of the same sex may appear to be a rival for your affections, compromising that parent’s ability to be a role model for you of a mature adult. Your love of home may express itself through an interest in your family tree, or could extend to your homeland.

Your affections are liable to be strong but the expression of them restrained, for you have a strong sense of responsibility when it comes to relationships and do not make a commitment until you can see probability of long-term stability. For that reason you may delay marriage until you are older than most people, or marry someone older than yourself whom you perceive as gaining responsibility through maturity. Not inherently faithful you will nevertheless stay in a relationship out of duty if love fails. The fun associated with Venus may be missing in a relationship, but you see commitment as an acceptable outlet for your strong sensuality and at that level it works well. If you are disappointed in love you may be pessimistic about finding it again and decide it’s better to do without (but you’d probably be wrong).

You are especially likely to be attracted to people of good standing in the world, for you may have high ambitions yourself, or see marriage to someone of good standing as enhancing your own. The downside of that is you may end up being in a marriage that’s motivated by status rather than love, and you stay in it to retain that status or, if status fails, out of duty.

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn which therefore influences Venus in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Saturn in this report for further guidance as to how Venus operates in your chart.

Venus square Pluto  (Strength:  4.15)

If you have been unloved or undervalued and have not yet become aware of the effect this has had on your life, then you can be sure your relationships will give you opportunities for learning, and for recovering a sense of your own worth. The experience of being unloved in your formative years can disempower you, but this can be an unconscious process, as can the attempt to regain that which has been lost. The consequence is that relationships can seem like power struggles. Any love that you experience, any sense of being valued, can feel so empowering that you attempt to keep it at all costs lest you fall back again into the feeling of worthlessness of which you have now become more aware. If you suspect that the person who you experience as loving and valuing you is interested in anyone else this can lead to intense jealousy whether or not your suspicions are well-founded. Much may then depend on how you deal with your experience of jealousy. If you realise that it arises from a deep hole inside you that represents your feelings of being unloved and undervalued, then you can use the opportunity to come to terms with that, and begin to love and value yourself, with the effect that you become less dependent on another to give you that sense of value. If you fail to realise this you may try and blame your partner for difficulties that arise between you. The partner may then draw away from you if he or she has not already done so, and the more you try to hold on the greater the distance becomes. Few would wish to get caught up into the maelstrom of your intense desires.

Venus trine Mars  (Strength:  3.29)

The desire for relatedness and harmony of Venus and the impulse to have one’s own way of Mars blend well in your life. In a relationship your wish for a good intellectual and emotional rapport is as strong as your sexual desire, and you probably have success in choosing a suitable partner. In any area of life you can be assertive at the same time as you take into account the needs and wishes of others. Conversely you can strive for harmony without prejudicing your own desires, or can blend your wishes with others for the sake of better result.

Venus semi-square Sun  (Strength:  1.43)

Whatever your purpose in life is, you can be distracted from it by whatever you find pleasurable. This is not to say you should abandon pleasure, but rather that you should enjoy the relaxation it gives you while remaining true to you main aims. It can also seem as if your personal relationships can take you away from more important issues in life. It may be that you have to accept that your aims in life and your personal needs, while both valid and to be honoured, have to be kept in separate boxes.

Moon in Aquarius

Your Moon sign shows how you instinctively respond to events in your day to day life, and your means of escape when taking time off from your main purpose in life. It shows how you seek safety and security. The house occupied by your Moon shows the area of life where you seek solace, and in which changes can significantly affect your mood. A planet aspecting the Moon colours your feeling nature and your instinctive responses to circumstances in your life.

The Moon signifies a place of refuge from the responsibilities of life in the world. The Moon in an air sign, and especially in Aquarius, tends to take refuge in thoughts or a philosophy of an ideal world constructed in accordance with a plan. According to your particular preferences the plan might be in accord with socialism, pacifism, feminism or some other ‘ism’ (even capitalism), but whatever it is it will be considered by most people to be different from the norm. It can be quite distressing to find that others don’t consider your ideals as obviously correct as you do, and that they even enjoy living in an unreconstructed world. Enjoyment of life may pass you by as your belief gets in the way of what your sensual self knows is fun.

Your ideals extend to home and family life where intimacy and emotional closeness smack of possessiveness to you, so you come across as cool and detached to those you love. Your emotions can be engaged, indeed can be easily aroused, but sustained depth of emotion is difficult for you and you prefer to think your way out of swampy feelings. This may be because you experience feelings with intensity rather than with depth, and you find it easier to relieve the intensity by escaping to your mind rather than by entering into them more fully. It is good to witness your feelings rather than identify with them, but you do have to experience them in order to witness them, and that you are inclined to avoid doing to the depth required. Jealousy is one emotion that has no place in your idea of relationship. You expect to be free to associate with anyone you wish, and may even espouse open marriage. You attempt to push down any murky feelings that are aroused when your partner exercises such freedom, girding yourself in your ideal like a coat of armour.

Friendship may be more amenable to you than romantic love, especially friendship based on a shared ideal. You are honest and fair with your friends and expect the same from them. You find it harder to support them when they are in need of empathy, especially if you believe that the source of their distress is a situation which their ideals should have prevented them getting into in the first place. Your idea of empathy may be to try and straighten them out and re-establish in them the principles on which you think life should be based.

If you are a mother you may be impatient with the natural dependency your children show and long for them grow up, when you can see yourself as their friend rather than as their mother. Leaving your children in a good quality playgroup while you pursue a career or other interests may be a good solution to the frustration you feel at the limitations of having them around you for a long period. Then you will enjoy more the shorter time you do have with them, and so will they, so everyone benefits.

Aquarius is ruled by Saturn which therefore influences the Moon in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Saturn in this report for further guidance as to how the Moon operates in your chart.

Moon in the Fifth House

When you want to relax you go and play a game, whether a sport or the game of love. You revert to the child in you, and if your childhood was a time of contentment, this can be particularly satisfying for you. Otherwise you may feel your sense of playfulness is restricted and attempts to relax in this way are frustrated. You probably enjoy having children around you. Many forms of creative expression may appeal to you, and these may include artistic, including musical, forms of expression. To relax you may sing or play a musical instrument. A problem may be that the game is more important to you than the other players, you seduce another only to dispose of him or her when the immediate game is over, or you gamble or take other risks without due regard to possible adverse consequences.

Your Temperament

Mediaeval astrologers used the birth chart to assess the balance of four temperament types: Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine and Phlegmatic - corresponding roughly to Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Their method was more sophisticated than the common modern one of simply adding up the number of planets in signs of each element. The assessment of your temperament which follows is based on the mediaeval method within the limitations of the software I am using. Greatest weight is given to the Ascendant, the Moon sign and the Season (as indicated by the Sun sign). Since the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere from what they are in the northern, and different in tropical regions, this assessment may be somewhat less accurate for births in those parts of the world.

Your birth chart indicates a sanguine/melancholic temperament. These two types are very different and hard to combine effectively, and so tend to appear alternately. Your sanguine side is sociable, animated, very motivated to connect with other people if not at a very deep level. Your melancholic side tends to be reflective, ponderous and somewhat shy in social settings in which you long to feel at home. In practice this is likely to mean you have fewer friends than the pure sanguine type, but with those you do have your connection may be characterised by a quality that might be called soulful. In order to enjoy that quality you may have to overcome a tendency to be aloof. Maybe you fear a feeling of vulnerability when there is no need, for many people are attracted to a sense of vulnerability in others. Where good social skills are required without any expectation of deeper intimacy, such as in professional consultations, you may be better than anyone else at creating good rapport between yourself and clients.

Sun in Sagittarius

I hope you have seen yourself clearly in this report so far, despite the fact that, unless you have a Leo Ascendant (in which case the Sun is your chart ruler), I have not mentioned your Sun. So far I have set the scene, the context in which the Sun has to operate. To express the Sun in your chart requires more conscious effort, which explains why, until you reach maturity, your Ascendant and Moon are usually more in evidence. If you have ever tried guessing someone’s Sun sign and got it wrong, it could well be that what you actually guessed was his or her Ascendant or Moon sign, but you would not have known since most people do not have such information.
Your Sun sign shows the qualities you need to develop if you are to feel that life has some purpose, and so feel more fulfilled. Such development does not normally happen instinctively, it has to be worked for consciously. The house occupied by your Sun shows the area of life in which you need to express those qualities. Doing so will help you to establish a firm sense of identity. A planet aspecting the Sun needs to be allowed to contribute to the establishment of that sense of identity. Such contribution could be positive, but may come across as negative and delay your development, but the struggle involved can give you great strength if successfully engaged.

Your task in life is to show how reaching out beyond your day to day environment can increase your enjoyment of life. There are many ways of doing this, including higher education, travel to cultures other than your own, and the religious or spiritual quest. The aim of the quest is not to become a guru, teacher or philosopher (though you may become any of these). The aim is to enjoy life more than you did before. Joseph Campbell, who made it his life’s quest to explore the myths and religions of the world, said he didn’t believe people were looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive. If you become the dry boring academic or the dictatorial guru demanding obeisance from your disciples then you’ve missed the point.

When you do discover joy in life, or even are on the way to doing so, you may have a problem with the limitations that life on earth has. You discover that endless travel and life on the sports field doesn’t pay the bills (unless you are clever enough to get paid to do what you enjoy). But then you may find that your optimism and fertile imagination help you find a way out of the difficulty, provided that you can devise a plan to bring to effect what your imagination can see.

You have the capacity to inspire others with the joy of the quest you are on, but beware lest you think others should follow precisely the same path. The temptation to arrogance appears to be great among spiritual leaders, and this may arise from a fear lest they be revealed as ordinary human beings with the same failings as the rest of us.

In relationships you need a partner who is content with the freedom you require on your quest. You may feel it is unjust if you find on your return that your partner is also exercising freedom and is not there for you. Good communication between you would help avoid misunderstandings.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter which therefore influences the Sun in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Jupiter in this report for further guidance as to how the Sun operates in your chart.

Sun in the Third House

The 3rd house signifies our interaction with siblings and other relatives (not parents) and neighbours, interaction which does not normally require much conscious intention but happens on a simple day to day level. We discourse with such people at an unconscious and habitual level having previously consciously learned what we talk about. The Sun in this house indicates that your manner of such communication is such that you stand out amongst your relatives and neighbours as one who speaks with authority and seeks to be listened to. You could be the one in your local community who shows how important ordinary day to day discourse can be to maintain good community relationships, and who takes a lead when such relationships go wrong to restore healthy community spirit. You just need to watch any tendency to a feeling of superiority which would put people off co-operating with you.

Sun conjunct Mercury  (Strength:  5.39)

Your mind, thinking ability and intellect can guide you towards your aims in life as signified by your Sun sign (if Mercury is in the same sign). On the other hand, once you pursue your aims in life your thinking can be so bound up with them that your capacity for objectivity is diminished, and you fail to take other points of view into account. You can be a very ready communicator, and can stimulate others who lack enthusiasm, but the communication tends to be one-way unless the responses you get are in line with your own point of view. Alternative points of view can threaten your sense of who you are, so unless you are confident within yourself you will be reluctant to hear them, and you will lose the contributions that others can make. Greater self-confidence enables you to hear the views of others without threat, to be more flexible where appropriate or to stick with your own views with enhanced insight.

Mercury in Sagittarius (Detriment)

Your Mercury sign indicates how your mind works, the way you think and perceive things, whether, for instance, you do so intuitively or in a rigid and set way. It also indicates how you communicate, and how you gather and pass on ideas and information. The house occupied by Mercury shows as area of life that occupies your mind and where you might be able to change the way you experience that area by the way you think about it. Planets aspecting Mercury affect the way your mind works and your approach to matters that interest you.

Mercury is the messenger of the zodiac, and in Sagittarius it would like to be able to convey information through the ether without having to bother with standard tangible channels of communication. For those with easy access to what might be called the higher mind this may work. For the rest of us this can lead to the conveyance of misinformation. You may have a wide range of interests but with little focus on any of them. When something does grab your interest in a deeper way you can inspire others with your knowledge as long as you don’t adopt the attitude of an arrogant know-all. You might be the life and soul of a party with your wit and repartee, but will not know what to do should behaviour at the party venture into areas you deem morally unacceptable. People of other countries and cultures probably interest you and you may like to travel or find out more about distant lands, such information being gleaned from TV programmes or films rather than books which might go into too much detail for you.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter which therefore influences Mercury in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Jupiter in this report for further guidance as to how Mercury operates in your chart.

Mercury in the Third House

Mercury’s sign placement and aspects to other planets are especially important, but whatever your level of intelligence you probably have a lively mind and are keen to communicate in speech, writing or by other means. Whatever case you are trying to present you can probably find the facts to support it (and some that don’t, which you may want to hide)! You probably enjoy contacts with neighbours and travel within your local area or connected with your normal interests.

Mercury conjunct Uranus  (Strength:  3.55)

You think quickly and can come up with original solutions to problems that others find hard to solve. The practical application of those solutions may be best left to others. Indeed, you may be quite impractical when it comes to the ordinary affairs of daily life, or with any matter in which you have no interest. You may lack patience with those who think more slowly and systematically than you do. You may be a channel through which new ideas and ways of looking at things enter the world, or a staunch defender of anyone who is. Some of these ideas may shock people, and you would be wise to check whether or not people are ready to hear them lest they are unable to handle them. Sometimes people may need to be disturbed, but do you speak out in the name of truth or because you are proud of your opinions and feel the need to stand out from the crowd? Original thinking does not necessarily go hand in hand with sound judgement. You will be popular with those who value straightforwardness, with ‘telling it how it is’, but your commitment to the truth can put you at odds with those to whom you have a sense of loyalty.

Mars in Virgo

Your Mars sign shows the manner of your aggression and assertion. You may have very direct or roundabout methods of getting what you want. You feel good if you express yourself in the manner of this sign. The house occupied by Mars shows the area of life in which you need to develop skill. Should you fail to do so, there may be consequences for your sense of well-being, and this may affect your health. You could also get very angry when the affairs of this house do not go well. Watch lest you blame others for your own failings. Planets aspecting Mars indicate further your method of self-assertion and may also suggest an area of life about which you could feel good if you were to develop it.

You harness your energy to practical tasks which you carry out with great precision. You take pride in taking trouble to complete those tasks efficiently and to the best of your ability. Should you make any mistakes you hope you discover them before anyone else does, lest your pride be hurt. When it comes to the expression of anger or aggression you are somewhat reticent, and unless you are fully aware of and in charge of your feelings they may emerge in the form of irritation and complaints about matters other than what really bothers you. Your health may also suffer, especially your digestive system. Keeping fit, by attention to both diet and exercise, will reap long-term benefit.

Mars is a very instinctual energy, and it’s sexual expression can be somewhat restrained by Virgo’s concern for usefulness and efficiency. Sex can seem messy and to be without obvious purpose (unless you are intending pregnancy). It might be good to remember that bodily pleasure can of itself be very therapeutic, leading to a vibrant flow of energy.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury which therefore influences Mars in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Mercury in this report for further guidance as to how Mars operates in your chart.

Mars in the Twelfth House

Finding out what you want, getting in touch with the energy required to bring it about, and learning discernment as to the wisdom of doing so, may take many years. Planets in the 12th house often lie low in the unconscious until inner frustration or events trigger their arousal, and then a conscious effort must be made to assimilate them. Mars is a particularly dangerous energy to be unaware of and often manifests as anger and aggression coming at you from other people. Sometimes you may feel others are hostile to you but you cannot identify anyone in particular. Either way, you have the opportunity to get in touch with your own individual identity. This doesn’t have to mean returning the aggression or fighting back. It may mean recognising your own inner strength in such a way you recognise that returning aggression for aggression is unnecessary and counter-productive. Once this inner strength is recognised the power force that Mars symbolises can be a force to be reckoned with. However it is unwise to use 12th house energies for self-centred ends, and one way to use the energy is to work or fight for the well-being of those who are isolated from society, perhaps people in hospital or prison.

Mars square Neptune  (Strength:  4.70)

These two planets are poles apart in their significations, and the awareness required to live with their association can bring great benefits to you and others. Being unaware brings unfortunate consequences. Neptune signifies the longing for the Paradise we enjoyed before what the Bible calls the Fall. In Paradise there was perfect beauty, harmony and enjoyment of the divine source of all things. There was no need for the assertion of one’s own will which Mars signifies. For life in the world in our fallen state Mars is necessary. The key to working with these two planets may be to harmonise your will with the divine at the same time as recognising that you cannot go back there and re-establish the state of innocence that prevailed before the Fall. You need to live in two worlds, and for many the link between the two is provided by various art forms - painting, sculpture, music, drama, poetry and others. Enjoyment of these, and for some the ability to perform them, facilitates a loosening of the grip the mundane world has. It can also facilitate access to a kind of divine empathy for those apparently trapped within the necessities of daily life, especially those who fall victim to life’s harsher aspects. The attempt to transcend the limitations of mundane life can take less productive forms. These involve, for example, excessive experience of alcohol, drugs, sex or any form of addiction. All these effectively loosen the grip everyday life has, but the experience of apparent bliss is temporary and has no power to imbue daily life with a creative dimension. That is not to deny that some who are so addicted can have great empathy with others in a similar situation. It is as if the experience of degradation is necessary in order to assist others similarly placed. However, such concern may be short-sighted, and you may be inclined to dream up great projects for the oppressed, the practical application of which have disastrous consequences. You may apprehend these consequences too late to withdraw your plans. You may even fail to see how harmful they are.

Jupiter in Scorpio

Your Jupiter sign shows the kind of qualities you value and have faith in, whether or not you are successful in achieving them in your own life. The house occupied by Jupiter indicates an area of life where (subject to other chart factors) you can achieve success more readily than in other areas. Sometimes it may seem like good fortune or luck rather than achievement. Jupiter in aspect to a faster-moving planet generally facilitates the matters governed by that planet.

Although you yourself may have quite a simple approach to life, finding happiness in the day to day joys of home and family, you value those who, either through virtue or necessity, explore the hidden depths that lie beneath everyday matters. You would do well to explore these yourself as one day you may need the insights that are available. You appreciate the power of the unconscious, the hidden motivations that lie beneath your interactions with others, but you may take little account of them until misfortune befalls you. You may be attracted to those possessing occult or magical powers, or seek such powers for yourself. If so you would be wise to seek increased self-knowledge lest you be led astray, or use such powers to dominate and manipulate others.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars which therefore influences Jupiter in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Mars in this report for further guidance as to how Jupiter operates in your chart.

Jupiter in the Second House

A healthy bank balance could be what it takes to enable you to enter into life with confidence. Better would be faith in the resources you have to provide everything you need. Money could be seen as congealed energy which needs to be released in order to be of benefit to yourself and others. This does not mean reckless spending, rather applying wisdom to know when to save and when to release the energy into an area that needs it. Some seem to have the luck to always have enough for their needs and more. Other simply attract wealth through their approach to life. You may see financial gifts as a means of supporting others through hard times, restoring their confidence in the worth of living. Religious faith could be a source of security to you.

Jupiter trine Midheaven  (Strength:  3.16)

You have some confidence in relation to your activities in the world including your career prospects, and this will help you towards success. It is faith rather than hard work that leads you there, and this could result in your overlooking some of the details required to make your projects as good as they could be.

Jupiter conjunct Pluto  (Strength:  2.95)

Faith, meaning and wealth signified by Jupiter associated with what is hidden but important signified by Pluto can take assume a literal manifestation as involvement in mining for hidden wealth in the form of precious metals, oil etc. It can also show as a concern to explore the hidden depths of the unconscious where lies buried treasure of a less tangible kind. In both forms there is the theme of finding wealth in something discarded in order to live a better life. If you are involved in mining or other forms of searching for things with tangible value, you could ponder whether or not this is because you are searching for deeper hidden value within your soul. If you are actively seeking your inner hidden wealth you could do so with great determination resulting in renewal in many areas of life, with the power to persuade others to discover wealth within themselves.

Saturn in Libra (Exaltation)

Your Saturn sign shows the kind of qualities you find it a struggle to express. You may even consider them not worth the effort, or denigrate them in some way. You may attempt to cover up your inhibitions by acting out those qualities in a falsely exaggerated manner. The house occupied by Saturn indicates an area of life whose mature expression is often subject to delay and frustration. It may take most of a lifetime to learn how to live with fulfilment in that area, but the reward for doing so will be great. Saturn in aspect to a faster-moving planet generally requires that planet to work harder to achieve success in the matters governed by that planet. The result of such work could be a more mature expression of those matters.

Libra signifies the desire for peace and harmony in relationships and in all of life. It signifies a strong aesthetic sense in art and design. Having Saturn here indicates you have to work hard to achieve all you look for in these areas, but such effort should normally bring success, since Libra is the sign of Saturn’s exaltation. Early in life you may doubt that such qualities are worth striving for, preferring a direct and uncompromising approach to life and disdaining the enjoyment of art. But Saturn will not be denied and sooner or later you will have to make some effort in these matters. Having to take another person’s well-being or point of view into account may be something you fear, so that you shy away from getting too close to anyone. Such closeness risks vulnerability, and you may fear losing independence. Another possibility is that you may feel it a matter of over-riding principle that you be in a partnership and have many social obligations and force yourself in this direction as if under a compulsion. Maturity can come when you observe yourself and your reactions in any form of partnership or social interaction, watching your feelings of fear or inadequacy in such situations and realising you do not have to be limited by such fears.

Libra is ruled by Venus which therefore influences Saturn in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Venus in this report for further guidance as to how Saturn operates in your chart.

Saturn conjunct Pluto  (Strength:  1.32)

These two planets both, in their different ways, signify control. Saturn signifies the control exercised by various forms of authority, be they parental, social/political or the censor we all have within us telling us what and what not to do. Pluto signifies the control we exercise when we fear the awakening within us of previously buried feelings of which we are ashamed. Should you see yourself as a peace-loving, gentle and warm-hearted human being, then it is understandable that you do not want to admit to feelings of hatred, violence and cruelty! The possibility here is that, should you be in a position of authority, you will exercise that authority in a way that allows people minimum freedom for self-expression, for fear, probably unconscious, that such self-expression will touch areas of your own life that need liberation. You may exercise rigid control over yourself, perhaps in the form of hard work over long hours, because if you were to let go unlived aspects of your life would break through and you are not ready to face the challenges that would entail. You may well fear your capacity to take charge of your own life, at the same time as being reluctant to let others exercise any authority over you. Hence you could sabotage your own power when it shows signs of working, and that of others since you do not like to see others exercising the power over you that you could discover within yourself. Once you are in contact with your own power and know how to use it responsibly, you could exercise it very effectively in your own life and in the world at large.

Uranus in the Third House

For centuries the skills exercised by astrologers were practised successfully without reference to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, these planets having yet to be discovered. Some modern astrologers have given them rulership of signs, but the stance taken in this report, based on my own experience in reading charts, is that such rulerships have limited value and the traditional rulerships have been retained. However, their significance in birth charts can be considerable, especially if they are angular (close to the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant or Imum Coeli) or in close aspect to other planets. Uranus stays in the same sign for seven years, Pluto for up to thirty. Therefore the sign placements of these planets in individual birth charts are not normally significant (their influence being generational) and are not delineated in this report. Their house positions, however, are worthy of consideration.
The house position of Uranus indicates an area of life where an independent free-thinking stance is preferred. Rules and expectations are experienced as frustrating and will often be breached, sometimes in what others would regard as an outrageous manner. This can be disruptive, especially in areas of life where fidelity and stability are assets. Care must be taken to create a framework in which freedom can be exercised as well as commitment. Uranus in aspect to a faster-moving planet can add excitement and insight to its workings, but also a wish to break out of any limitations.

Conventional schooling methods may not have suited you, for your way of thinking and learning is not stable enough for rote learning. You are prone to sudden insights that are ahead of anyone else, so that when you are in conversation with anyone you can suddenly lose the thread and the other person wonders where your mind has gone. You can come up with solutions to a problem which others have been grappling with for a long time. You may be seen as something of a maverick in your neighbourhood, restlessly moving around and perhaps being involved in local politics to improve people’s plight.

Neptune in the Third House

The house position of Neptune shows the area of life where you seek an experience that reaches beyond the mundane necessities of daily life. You could try to enrich those areas, exercising your imagination so that some kind of transcendent reality can shine through them. Alternatively you could choose to sacrifice earthly satisfaction in that area of life in the name of what you see as a more spiritual mode of existence. The conflict between the necessities of day to day living and the desire for something beyond it could signify difficulties for you in the matters governed by this house. Neptune in aspect to a faster-moving planet has a similar significance.

You find it more difficult than some to focus your mind clearly on a particular issue and communicate clearly about it. You are reluctant to define any issue clearly because you can sense beyond the boundaries. Maybe you feel words cannot convey what you want to say. You want to communicate how something feels, and words may not seem an appropriate vehicle for doing so. Because of this you may come across to others as less intelligent than you actually are. Others may think that your difficulty in expressing yourself clearly in words implies a defective mind. This may have been an issue in your schooldays when you came across as having nothing to say on a particular subject when the real problem was you couldn’t express your thoughts in the approved way and your intelligence went unrecognised. Based on your own experience you may be good at teaching children with learning difficulties. If you do succeed in putting your thoughts and feelings into words it may be in such a way that you manage to reach people in a way that reason and logic cannot do, thereby enlarging their understanding. Perhaps you could do this by expressing yourself in poetry or song. Experiences with siblings are covered by this house. Perhaps you have to make sacrifices on behalf of a sibling or, if one has died, you experience a sense of guilt about it as if you were responsible when probably you were not.

House Rulers and Dispositors

We now come to the houses in your birth chart. There are twelve of these, each referring to a different area of your life. The 1st house is the Ascendant and this has already been described early in this report. Now follow the other eleven, first the so-called angular houses, the Midheaven, the Descendant and the Imum Coeli, then the remaining eight. I have already delineated the house position of each planet in your chart, and for the delineation of any house, planets within it are the most important factors. However, each house is also ruled by a planet which will not normally be within it. For each house following I will specify its ruling planet. The house in which that planet resides indicates how the affairs of the house it rules might turn out.

For instance, if the ruler of the Midheaven or 10th house (activities in the world) is in the 5th (entertainment, children etc.), then your career might involve working in the entertainment industry or with children. If it does not you might consider it as an option. If the ruler of the 2nd house (money, possessions) is in the Descendant or 7th, your financial affairs will be influenced (for good or ill) by your partnerships or relationships. For each house, check again the delineation already given above for its ruler. This will tell you how the affairs of that house might turn out.

Cancer Midheaven (10th House)

The Midheaven is the highest point in the birth chart, where the Sun is at midday. The sign in which it falls and planets in the 10th house signify the way you reach out into the world and the kind of activities that could be appropriate for you therein. Such activities do not necessarily constitute your career, but ideally they would be included within it. (For consideration of your career direction the Ascendant, its ruler, the Sun, the Moon and the 10th house are all relevant.) The greater the number of planets in the 10th house of your birth chart, especially if the Sun is one of them, the more frustrated you will feel if you do not have significant activity outside of your home and family environment. If family commitments tie you, then you might give some consideration to ways of rearranging them so that you do have opportunities for activities beyond them. Your experience of your mother may be shown by this house.

Whatever activities you do in the world, you seek to do them in a place, or with people, that give you a sense of belonging, as if you were a member of a family. Caring for the people you work with may be as important to you as getting the job done. Even better, the job may involve caring for people. You may be more ambitious than you realise.

Cancer is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by the Moon.

Refer to the description of this planet above for clues as to how the affairs of this house may manifest in your life. The house position of this planet links the affairs of the two houses. Any planets in this house will also have been described above, and these are even more important.

Aries Descendant (7th House)

Opposite the Ascendant, the Descendant indicates your experience of yourself in relation to another person. Usually it begins as the way in which you experience the other person, and the kind of person to whom you are attracted (but note there are many other indicators of this in the chart). The sign on the Descendant and any planets in the 7th house show qualities you look for in another person. They may be qualities, desirable or otherwise, that you repeatedly find in people to whom you are attracted. As a general rule they are traits within you that may be undeveloped or of which you are unaware, and the relationship gives you an opportunity to wake up to them.

Among the qualities you find attractive in other people are boldness, assertiveness and spontaneity. This could complement a tendency to indecisiveness on your own part and encourage you to find these qualities within yourself. You could also attract very angry, even abusive, people into your life. Look at the sign, house and aspects of Mars for further guidance.

Aries is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by Mars.

Capricorn IC (4th House)

Opposite the Midheaven this is the lowest point in the birth chart, where the Sun is at midnight. The sign in which it falls and planets in the 4th house signify your experience of your home and family (in particular of your father), of your soul and most personal space, that without which you cannot reach out into the world (10th house) in a satisfactory way.

Your early family background may have been one in which exploration and free self-expression were discouraged and rules were strictly enforced. Outside of the home you may have had a struggle to establish yourself because you were not used to being able to find your own way and establish your own rules. Now you need a stable home base in which you can ponder, in the depths of your soul, how the great riches hidden therein can help you feel confident in yourself so that life in the world outside can be more fulfilling.

Capricorn is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by Saturn.
