Introduction

It can be rather disconcerting to be told, in a report such as this, that ‘you are assertive, outgoing and courageous’ when it seems very clear to you that you are not any of those! This report is not a seamless text. Rather, it is a collection of delineations of features of your birth chart such as planets in signs, planets in houses and aspects between planets. The challenge in writing the delineations that make up this report has been to put them together in such a way that clarity is given to contradictions. If, for instance, Mars in your birth chart is closely associated with both Jupiter and Saturn, then boldness and timidity are both likely to feature. However in most cases I have not written a delineation that takes account of both associations within a single portion of text. In the case of aspects between planets a numerical value for the strength of the aspects is given. Where delineations appear contradictory you will probably notice that the aspect with the greater strength is more noticeable in your life. (As a general rule a strength of 4 or more is strong, less than 2 is weak.) Also, if you read the descriptions of the sign and house positions of each planet, you should recognise the areas in your life where each of the apparently contradictory traits operates. In a few cases the same delineation may appropriately appear in two different place in your report, and in such cases you may see it repeated.

This report has two principle aims.

1.) To help you to recognise that your temperament and personality traits are just fine the way that they are - you do not need to change them. Over the years, I have found that one of the main benefits clients gain from a consultation is the relief that their personality traits are confirmed by their birth charts. For instance, someone who prefers to make decisions based on a kind of ‘gut instinct’ may look on with envy at someone who prefers a more rational or ‘common sense’ approach. An introvert surrounded by extroverts may feel under pressure to change, as if introversion was an inferior way of being. The birth chart can recognise these traits and affirm their validity.

2.) To help you, given that your temperament is as it is, to recognise patterns in your life that may be holding you back from all that you have it in you to be. Such recognition may help you to make choices about how you live your life that will result in breaking through those patterns. I hope you will also find in the report indications as to sources of help for the challenges you face.

In pursuit of these aims I have constructed this report according to a sequence that should guide you into greater depth as it proceeds. The components of the sequence will be described briefly here and in greater detail during the report:

1.) Ascendant or Rising Sign and its Ruler

This is the zodiacal sign that was rising at the moment of your birth. It says much about what primarily motivates you in life, which may have to do, for instance, with freedom of expression or with the meeting of physical or emotional needs. Together with planets aspecting the ascendant, planets in the 1st house (about to rise at birth) and the planet ruling the ascendant, this traditionally shows the quality of what might be called your ‘life force’.

2.) The Moon

This shows how you instinctively respond to events in your day to day life, and where you wish to escape to when taking time off from your main purpose in life. It shows where you seek safety and security. Together with the Ascendant it is the main indicator of temperament.

3.) The Sun

In contrast with the Ascendant and the Moon, this shows where some conscious effort is normally required in order to find and fulfil your purpose in life. This does not come instinctively, it has to be worked for, and you will not feel complete without it.

4.) The Planets

Together with the Sun and the Moon each of these is a significator for some tangible or experiential aspect of your life. Throughout this report reference to planets may include the Sun and the Moon unless the context indicates otherwise.

Each planet in your chart falls in a sign and in a house. The sign in which a planet is placed influences the way in which it acts in your chart. The house shows the area in your life, e.g. money, relationships and career, in which it operates. In addition to the house in which a planet falls, that planet may rule one or more other houses, linking the matters governed by those houses with the house in which the planet is placed. I go into more detail about this towards the end of this report.

Each planet is considered dignified (well-placed) in certain signs and debilitated (poorly placed) in others. The two principal levels of dignity are rulership and exaltation, those of debility are detriment and fall. A dignified planet will add benefit to the matters of the house in which it is placed and to that which it rules. A debilitated planet will make the matters of those houses more challenging. If a planet has any of these four levels of dignity or debility in the sign in which it falls, I will say so in this report.

In addition, each planet may form an aspect with one or more other planets, indicating ways in which these planets could work together to your advantage, or where you may have to struggle to reconcile different experiences in your life. The major aspects are the sextile, square, trine and opposition. Minor aspects also covered in this report are the semi-square and the sesquiquadrate. A planet may also be conjunct, that is, close to, another. As mentioned above, this report will indicate the strength of each aspect in your chart. Any score of 4 or more is strong, less than 2 is weak, but do not ignore any of them.

Aries Ascendant

In an age in which one’s Sun sign is pedalled as of over-riding importance, as indicated by the preponderance of Sun sign columns in popular newspapers and magazines, it may seem strange not to start this report with a description of yours. The reason is that your ascendant says something far more basic about you than does your Sun sign. It describes your primary motivation in life. Some people, having a fire sign (Aries, Leo or Sagittarius) rising, are motivated primarily by the desire for freedom of action; others, having an air sign (Gemini, Libra or Aquarius) rising by the desire for freedom of movement; others, having an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn) rising by the need for physical security; others, having a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces) rising, by the need for emotional security. Planets aspecting the ascendant or in the 1st house, especially any in the same sign as the ascendant, influence the primary motivation. The planet that rules your ascendant shows, by its sign and house position, the way in which you attempt to achieve your primary motivation. It does not make sense to look at your Sun sign until we have looked at what motivates you at a more instinctive level. That is why we will even look at your Moon before we look at your Sun (unless your Ascendant is Leo in which case the Sun is your chart ruler).

Your Ascendant is Aries, a fire sign, indicating a strong desire for freedom of action and the power to achieve anything you want. You will be passionate about starting a new project which interests you and will be determined to see it through to a conclusion, even if it means handing it over to someone else when the details begin to bore you. Failure to consider the consequences of any action you intend to take before taking it may have unfortunate results. You may not care much about what others feel about the course of action you intend to take. This can be both an asset and a liability; an asset because potentially you can bring your action to a speedier conclusion and you and all about you may benefit from this; a liability because your relationships with others, including any near and dear to you, may suffer if their wishes and interests are not taken into account. Harmony in relationships may be hard to achieve, and will not be gained by giving way unless what you are fighting for turns out to be of little value anyway. Your desire for freedom of action is basic and your ideal partners will let you have your way at the same time as developing their own interests that do not conflict with yours. Then you can have quality time together sharing your successes and failures and support each other, rather than both be frustrated because neither of you is living life to the full.

Aries is ruled by Mars. Mars is therefore your chart ruler and will be described next after aspects to your Ascendant and planets (if any) in your 1st House.

Ascendant square Venus  (Strength:  1.11)

Your primary motivation in life (Ascendant) is at odds with the part of your life where you desire peace, harmony and fun (Venus). This could lead you to behave in such a way that you obstruct your intentions. Perhaps you engage in relationships with people to whom you are not really attracted, or dress in such a way that makes it difficult to obtain what you are really looking for.

Uranus in the First House

For centuries the skills exercised by astrologers were practised successfully without reference to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, these planets having yet to be discovered. Some modern astrologers have given them rulership of signs, but the stance taken in this report, based on my own experience in reading charts, is that such rulerships have limited value and the traditional rulerships have been retained. However, their significance in birth charts can be considerable, especially if they are angular (close to the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant or Imum Coeli) or in close aspect to other planets. Uranus stays in the same sign for seven years, Pluto for up to thirty. Therefore the sign placements of these planets in individual birth charts are not normally significant (their influence being generational) and are not delineated in this report. Their house positions, however, are worthy of consideration.
The house position of Uranus indicates an area of life where an independent free-thinking stance is preferred. Rules and expectations are experienced as frustrating and will often be breached, sometimes in what others would regard as an outrageous manner. This can be disruptive, especially in areas of life where fidelity and stability are assets. Care must be taken to create a framework in which freedom can be exercised as well as commitment. Uranus in aspect to a faster-moving planet can add excitement and insight to its workings, but also a wish to break out of any limitations.

Uranus symbolises enlightenment, new ideas, disruption of the status quo, thinking ‘outside the box’. When in the 1st house it indicates you are open to such concepts and to displaying them, often to the consternation of those around you. If life is getting too predictable you can take delight in breaking open set patterns and bringing in something new, and in doing it again when what is new becomes old. Anyone who gets a fixed idea about you on first meeting is likely to be surprised at the next meeting. This does not make for stable relationships and anyone who wants to get close to you had better allow you plenty of space, for you hate to be trapped. Even then it may be difficult to get close to you for you don’t find situations requiring contact with strong emotion comfortable. When feelings get strong you may suddenly cut off rather than stay with them and learn from them. Before you enter into an agreement make sure you are willing to keep it.

Ascendant Ruler and Dispositor

Aries is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by Mars.

Mars in Virgo and in the Sixth House

Your Mars sign shows the manner of your aggression and assertion. You may have very direct or roundabout methods of getting what you want. You feel good if you express yourself in the manner of this sign. The house occupied by Mars shows the area of life in which you need to develop skill. Should you fail to do so, there may be consequences for your sense of well-being, and this may affect your health. You could also get very angry when the affairs of this house do not go well. Watch lest you blame others for your own failings. Planets aspecting Mars indicate further your method of self-assertion and may also suggest an area of life about which you could feel good if you were to develop it. As ruler of your Ascendant Mars is especially important in your chart.

You harness your energy to practical tasks which you carry out with great precision. You take pride in taking trouble to complete those tasks efficiently and to the best of your ability. Should you make any mistakes you hope you discover them before anyone else does, lest your pride be hurt. When it comes to the expression of anger or aggression you are somewhat reticent, and unless you are fully aware of and in charge of your feelings they may emerge in the form of irritation and complaints about matters other than what really bothers you. Your health may also suffer, especially your digestive system. Keeping fit, by attention to both diet and exercise, will reap long-term benefit.

Mars is a very instinctual energy, and it’s sexual expression can be somewhat restrained by Virgo’s concern for usefulness and efficiency. Sex can seem messy and to be without obvious purpose (unless you are intending pregnancy). It might be good to remember that bodily pleasure can of itself be very therapeutic, leading to a vibrant flow of energy.

Your work, whether your career or any other work setting, is a setting in which your aggressive instincts can be easily aroused. You may prefer to work independently, but if you do have others working with or for you they probably know who’s boss. You do not like it if someone does a job better or quicker than you do, so it is as well to put your energy into acquiring the skills necessary to do the job well and to take pride in the precision with which you do it. If a fellow worker is being abused you could well put your energy into fighting for his or her rights. The 6th house relates to the body’s health, and buried anger and aggression can have serious consequences. Headaches are a warning, more serious symptoms could follow. Exercise is helpful but it cannot be a permanent solution to buried rage. That which is siphoned off builds up again if the underlying feelings remain unconscious.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury which therefore influences Mars in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Mercury in this report for further guidance as to how Mars operates in your chart.

Mars conjunct Jupiter  (Strength:  6.69)

Whatever it is in life that you really want and are prepared to fight for you believe in strongly, and this can lead you to put that much more energy into the actions you take to secure your ends. The direct incisive energy of Mars and the benign protective energy of Jupiter do not make a natural blend. At best you are aware of other people’s well-being and will be concerned to avoid any actions that could endanger them. Whatever you believe in you are prepared to fight for or defend, so it would be as well to believe in the right things lest you get carried away to some distant target that is far from the truth. Religion and politics are likely areas in which you could invest your energy. A love of sport and a constant search for fun could siphon off excess energy, or divert you from your main aims in life. Any form of constraint will not appeal to you, and one form of such constraint could be commitment in relationships, which you see as restricting your adventurous spirit, at the same time as you wish to return home from such adventures to find a loyal partner waiting for you.

Mars square Sun  (Strength:  3.84)

The Sun symbolises your purpose in life which you have to discover, Mars your instinctive desire. Mars knows what it wants and pursues it vigorously without much concern for others on the way. The Sun’s desire is not immediately obvious and has to be discovered through the course of life. The problem with this aspect is that you may pursue your immediate desires so vigorously that you fail to find your ultimate purpose in life. You may well be dimly aware, or even highly conscious, of what your goals in life should be, but you are so busy pursuing more immediate wishes that you neglect such higher purposes. Thus you are at odds with yourself, misdirecting your energy and pursuing goals that cannot give you lasting satisfaction because they are not in line with your ultimate purpose. The resulting frustration, if you are not experienced in handling it, can lead to loss of temper, even eruptions of violent behaviour, especially early in life when the necessary experience has still to be acquired. The resolution to this may lie in an awareness that you do have conflicting desires, and to make space for both in your life in such a way that they do not antagonise each other.

Mars square Moon  (Strength:  3.29)

You experience your security needs as at variance with your desire to act decisively towards achievement of your other aims in life. It does not do to be excessively ‘nice’ as then hormones released into your body as a result of frustrated desires can lead to ill-health. You may have the capacity for deep thought, but the influence of your emotions is liable to lead to decisions against the best interests of yourself and of others. Probably you exhibit a lifestyle and career characterised by independence of others, mainly to avoid routine and emotional control by others who you may perceive as trying to mother you. Such people may remind you of your own mother, from whom you may have had to battle to free yourself and live your own life. Trying to live a responsible life without denying or repressing your aggressive instinct is quite a challenge for you, but one well worth the effort because it is in your own interests, as well as those of others, that you do not destroy places of safety in your life.

If Mars is in Virgo overcoming frustration is a continual challenge. The practicalities required for success seem too mundane for your fiery imagination. If you are patient enough to allow your imagination to inform your work, being prepared to change your mind when it is clear you are wrong, then you can be successful.

If Mars is in Pisces it can be a challenge to harness your deep emotions towards useful action. Your ideas may be too big to put into practice.

(This aspect is less significant if Mars is neither in Virgo nor in Pisces.)

Moon in Sagittarius

Your Moon sign shows how you instinctively respond to events in your day to day life, and your means of escape when taking time off from your main purpose in life. It shows how you seek safety and security. The house occupied by your Moon shows the area of life where you seek solace, and in which changes can significantly affect your mood. A planet aspecting the Moon colours your feeling nature and your instinctive responses to circumstances in your life.

You rarely feel at home within four walls for you must be frequently out and about, meeting people who share your zest for life, often abroad or from other cultures. Family ties can be something of a burden to you, and you prefer a partner who is as freedom-loving as you are, preferably also one who will keep a home waiting for you when you return from your travels. You may use any excuse to escape the confines of home and family life, even things that don’t interest you. Matters that do interest you are likely to concern human rights and justice, or maybe religious or spiritual concerns. In fact justice for those outside your home may concern you more than your children who may justly feel they have a right to more attention from their parents. The attention you do give them may be very supportive in encouraging them to take an interest in and learn about the wider world, and in stirring the imagination. Establishing a close emotional bond with your children may not be your strength. If you are stuck at home you may escape by watching on the television others doing things you long to do yourself, such as sport or taking holidays in exotic destinations. Your bookshelf may be full of holiday brochures or the diaries of travel writers, or, if you are more academically inclined, writings of a philosophical nature, perhaps on the subject of ethics.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter which therefore influences the Moon in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Jupiter in this report for further guidance as to how the Moon operates in your chart.

Moon in the Ninth House

You need to feel you are on a journey through life rather than fixed in any particular place or mindset. This could manifest as a desire to travel to distant lands and alien cultures, also to live for a while in such settings. You could have a deep interest in religious, spiritual or philosophical matters, with an intuitive grasp of the myths and symbols which add a significance to life which can feel dead without them. Caring for others could mean sharing with them your insights into life’s purpose. However you may have to shake yourself out of an approach to spiritual matters which simply follows beliefs you have acquired from your family without giving them critical consideration. You may feel insecure if such beliefs are questioned, and you may need to go through that insecurity while you search for a spiritual path that is true to yourself.

Moon opposite Sun  (Strength:  7.45)

Restlessness is a common experience in your life. The demands of your work or other goals in life seems to conflict with what your soul requires. Learning to be content with the time out that you have without guilt or otherwise feeling the need to get back to more goal-oriented activity can be difficult. Until you do learn it your relationships may suffer. If you cannot be relaxed about the apparently warring factions within your own psyche, then a feeling of contentment within an intimate relationship will evade you. Your restlessness may well reflect a difficult relationship between your parents, and an experience of conflict because you found that pleasing one meant displeasing the other. Relationships are actually very important to you, providing settings in which you can see aspects of you own nature you find hard to accept reflected back to you by the person to whom you are close. The experience may be difficult but worth going through for you feel incomplete on your own You may have to negotiate with the different aspects of your nature, agreeing with one to let the other have time, promising the first that its turn will come later. You may frequently get involved in arguments where your disagreement arises because your aspirations do not tally with your experience of life. Your arguer may say what life is like and you say it should be some other way - or vice versa.

(This aspect is less significant if the Sun is not in Gemini.)

Moon square Jupiter  (Strength:  1.97)

You have a good-natured temperament, helpful and sympathetic, and can be very protective to those in trouble, especially any in your own family or otherwise known to you personally. However you can be somewhat restless, perhaps because you feel your own sense of security is threatened by the support you give to others. This may lead you to promise more help than you are actually prepared to give and people feel let down. You are drawn towards interests that take you out of day to day concerns, such as religion, spirituality, drama or foreign travel. However you are liable to be ambivalent about the contribution these make to your life. They may seem to promise more than they deliver in terms of comfort and security, and this could lead you to reject without proper consideration a practice that could benefit your whole outlook on life. Alternatively your belief could be so strong that you preach its benefits while unconscious of the fact that you are not enjoying what it promises for yourself. If this dichotomy is pronounced there may be divergence between what you believe and what you practice, for instance you may believe in and commend to others an ascetic lifestyle while living a self-indulgent one.

(This aspect is less significant if Jupiter is neither in Virgo nor in Pisces.)

Moon sextile Saturn  (Strength:  1.71)

You are likely to be restrained in your emotional expression and in your ability to enter into situations that require connection with your feelings in order to enjoy them. In consequence you often feel cut off from a connection with others that could give you joy.

The positive side is that you are less likely than others to jeopardise the relationships with others that you do have on account of over-exuberance in the expression of your feelings. You are sensitive and feel vulnerable to the possibility of being hurt, and this can lead to you building what feels like a solid wall around yourself to protect yourself from pain. Bear in mind that the sensitivity that can be so painful for you may make you attractive to others, and therefore there is no need to attempt to hide your vulnerability, nor to try and appear to others as strong. If you learn to value yourself as you are, then you open the way to more satisfying relationships with others that can provide a safe context in which to enjoy your deeper feelings that you hide from others. Greater satisfaction also means that you will want to keep the contacts you have, and so will not let others down. In any case you are likely to be reliable in the sense of being a hard worker with a strong sense of duty (a sense you expect others to have too), satisfaction from a job well done compensating for lack of satisfaction in other areas of life. Inspiration can combine with your balanced rational faculties to bring about wise decisions.

(This aspect is less significant if Saturn is neither in Libra nor in Aquarius.)

Your Temperament

Mediaeval astrologers used the birth chart to assess the balance of four temperament types: Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine and Phlegmatic - corresponding roughly to Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Their method was more sophisticated than the common modern one of simply adding up the number of planets in signs of each element. The assessment of your temperament which follows is based on the mediaeval method within the limitations of the software I am using. Greatest weight is given to the Ascendant, the Moon sign and the Season (as indicated by the Sun sign). Since the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere from what they are in the northern, and different in tropical regions, this assessment may be somewhat less accurate for births in those parts of the world.

Your birth chart indicates a mainly choleric temperament. This shows as quick reactions to everything going on around you, and an inclination to act decisively to bring about that which you desire. You spend little time sitting around pondering what to do, but are much happier actively engaged in life, typically with yourself in charge of whatever you are doing. Anger may the only emotion you normally show. All other deep emotions you are inclined to hide, perhaps because you believe that showing them would not contribute towards achieving your goals in life, or perhaps because they would tarnish your image of yourself as someone who is not swayed by extraneous circumstances from achieving those goals. Your energy is obvious to everyone, including some who may find it difficult to be close to you for long, they being of a more introverted temperament. If you lack confidence you will not want to show it, and if you start a project you will want to see it through to a conclusion, though it may mean getting other people to see to the detailed application of your plans. Humility does not come easily to you. People with a melancholic temperament you find it hard to understand and get on with, especially if you have a disagreement and they turn out to be right. Sanguine people may appeal to you most as they may be happy to work on the practical application of your ideas.

Sun in Gemini

I hope you have seen yourself clearly in this report so far, despite the fact that, unless you have a Leo Ascendant (in which case the Sun is your chart ruler), I have not mentioned your Sun. So far I have set the scene, the context in which the Sun has to operate. To express the Sun in your chart requires more conscious effort, which explains why, until you reach maturity, your Ascendant and Moon are usually more in evidence. If you have ever tried guessing someone’s Sun sign and got it wrong, it could well be that what you actually guessed was his or her Ascendant or Moon sign, but you would not have known since most people do not have such information.
Your Sun sign shows the qualities you need to develop if you are to feel that life has some purpose, and so feel more fulfilled. Such development does not normally happen instinctively, it has to be worked for consciously. The house occupied by your Sun shows the area of life in which you need to express those qualities. Doing so will help you to establish a firm sense of identity. A planet aspecting the Sun needs to be allowed to contribute to the establishment of that sense of identity. Such contribution could be positive, but may come across as negative and delay your development, but the struggle involved can give you great strength if successfully engaged.

Your goal in life is to become what the nervous system is to the body - the communication system, passing messages and information from one part to another and returning with responses. In order to convey information you have to gather it, so you may be an avid reader of books, magazines and newspapers, and you may watch or listen to every news broadcast you can even while doing something else (watching the TV news while eating your dinner). You may not be too concerned about the quality or depth of the information you carry. Once you have learned so much about a certain subject you may get bored and prefer to pursue another topic that has aroused your curiosity. Lack of the patience required to gain an in-depth knowledge of any particular subject may lead you to pursue a career where a wide range of knowledge is needed rather than a specialist knowledge of one field. Also, if you work in, for instance, forestry, you may feel more at home working with individual trees than managing the whole forest.

The Sun in an air sign indicates a need to engage with life at the mental level, but by staying in touch with your feelings your contribution to life is greatly enhanced, for knowledge acquired when you are in touch with all your faculties is much more thorough, and you can also communicate it at a deeper level, which you will find more satisfying. Also, you will become more attractive to those who live life more comfortably at the feeling level and this will lead to more satisfying relationships.

Gemini is ruled by Mercury which therefore influences the Sun in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Mercury in this report for further guidance as to how the Sun operates in your chart.

Sun in the Third House

The 3rd house signifies our interaction with siblings and other relatives (not parents) and neighbours, interaction which does not normally require much conscious intention but happens on a simple day to day level. We discourse with such people at an unconscious and habitual level having previously consciously learned what we talk about. The Sun in this house indicates that your manner of such communication is such that you stand out amongst your relatives and neighbours as one who speaks with authority and seeks to be listened to. You could be the one in your local community who shows how important ordinary day to day discourse can be to maintain good community relationships, and who takes a lead when such relationships go wrong to restore healthy community spirit. You just need to watch any tendency to a feeling of superiority which would put people off co-operating with you.

Sun trine Saturn  (Strength:  5.26)

The achievement of your purpose in life requires discipline and lasting effort, but the rewards of your hard work can be great. Your family background was likely to have been one in which your innate abilities and qualities were not recognised, with the consequence that you had a struggle to discover what they were, the struggle made harder by the lack of confidence that resulted from poor family support. You knew the rules you were expected to follow, but living within those rules meant that you had little opportunity to develop your innate abilities. The upside is that when you begin to discover what your talents are and thus recover some self-confidence, it will be little problem to you to apply the discipline necessary to develop those talents and achieve some satisfaction in life. There will be no rapid success, but you may not mind that, recognising that achievements will be that much more satisfying if they have been gained by hard work. You are inclined to ponder your experiences in life and to think deeply and constructively about them. This could have a positive outcome in the desire and ability to bring order to your social and business life, thus concentrating energy in a way that will benefit both. Saturn is a significator for hermits, and you may find your path to success a lonely one, either through a recognition that you work best that way, or because of a lack of trust in the ability of others to help you, or because you are simply too shy to ask. You may be proud of your achievements, and will be delighted at any recognition you receive at the same time as being modest and humble about those achievements.

Sun square Jupiter  (Strength:  2.52)

Jupiter is a big planet signifying abundance, but when aspecting the Sun in this way it can be a big distraction from the aims of the Sun which are more to do with your overall purpose in life. You have faith in yourself, but, especially early in life, this faith may not be based on a realistic assessment of your qualities and abilities. You therefore are inclined to overreach yourself, being blindly optimistic as to the success of your projects on which you spend more resources than they justify. You cannot tolerate boredom for long, which could translate into an aversion to the hard work necessary for success in life. Consequently you may incline to laziness, indulging in life’s pleasures that you haven’t earned, or to misguided adventures that relieve the monotony of life but which end in misfortune. There could be implications for health, especially related to your liver if food is one of the pleasures in which you indulge. Try to remember that being true to your purpose in life requires discipline and self-knowledge. Try to avoid short cuts to success, and especially self-styled gurus who promise wealth if you follow their paths.

Mercury in Gemini (Rulership)

Your Mercury sign indicates how your mind works, the way you think and perceive things, whether, for instance, you do so intuitively or in a rigid and set way. It also indicates how you communicate, and how you gather and pass on ideas and information. The house occupied by Mercury shows as area of life that occupies your mind and where you might be able to change the way you experience that area by the way you think about it. Planets aspecting Mercury affect the way your mind works and your approach to matters that interest you.

You enjoy gathering information and passing it on to others. You are a versatile thinker and can gather information about lots of things but you will soon drop any subject that does not interest you. Even if something does interest you sufficient dedication to pursue knowledge in that subject to a vocational level may be difficult for you since distractions come at you from all sides. Your mind may be somewhat restless, you turn things over in your mind a multitude of times, playing with ideas and viewing things from different angles when you really do wish you could have a good night’s sleep. Mercury’s rulership of Gemini means it is particularly well placed in this sign. Mercury’s freedom of movement between normal daily life and the underworld means that you should be able to view information from a deeper perspective than most people. Knowledge is not just for entertaining the mind but also putting yourself and others in touch with a deeper side of the self beyond the superficial personality. However, Gemini being an air sign you will be uncomfortable with the deeper side of life unless you have significant water sign placements in your chart or Mercury is sextile or trine Neptune or Pluto.

Mercury in the Fourth House

Your home background may have been one in which academic achievement and the exercise of the rational faculties were honoured and rewarded rather then the growth of emotional and physical contact. Your father especially may have been articulate and clever, or maybe critical and unpredictable, with the consequence that even in later years you long for a close father-figure in your life. Your ways of thinking may have been strongly influenced by your family and it would be wise to look and see whether or not these ways still serve you. You may find it hard to settle in one home for long, perhaps reflecting your childhood experience of constantly being on the move - uncomfortable if the Moon is in an earth sign. You probably have, or would like to have, a room in your home you call a ‘study’, a place of learning within your home. Studying your dreams could be especially helpful to you.

Mercury conjunct Venus  (Strength:  11.96)

Thoughts concerning relatedness, whether about love, lust or simply a harmonious intellectual rapport, are never far from your mind. Your manner of communication is such as to promote good relations with whomever you are conversing, but if delving into the darker side of human nature is necessary for deeper intimacy this may not appeal to you. If you have an over-active mind (Mercury) then engaging in activities that appeal to the senses (Venus) will help to restore balance. Likewise you can use your mind to discriminate against over-indulgence in the senses. However the needs of the mind and those of the body do not always coincide, and this can lead to discomfort in close relationships where a partner may feel hurt when you disconnect from your emotions for a while, and you also feel hurt in reaction to that. With maturity you will be able to communicate your needs to each other and so avoid unnecessary pain.

Mercury opposite Midheaven  (Strength:  5.61)

Your family background is likely to have been quite a restless one with plenty of coming and going, as well as mental stimulation through discussion, books and magazines. Maybe you are interested in your family history or in genealogy generally. There may have been little support for your growth in emotional maturity.

Venus in Gemini

Your Venus sign is indicative of your values and what you appreciate in a person or object. It shows the kind of experiences you seek and tend to meet in relationships and the way you go about interacting with others, and indicates your dress sense. The house occupied by Venus shows an area of life where you seek beauty, pleasure and fulfilment, and which you may value more then others. Planets aspecting Venus influence the qualities that you value or find attractive and the extent to which you actually enjoy them. They also show the kinds of interactions you have in relationships.

Venus in the sign of communication disposes you to a large group of friends with whom you are in constant touch by letter, email, telephone or text message. You love to gossip about anything, especially the love lives of others and maybe even your own. You may be an avid reader of romantic novels - reading about the intricacies of the love lives of fictional characters can be safer than having one yourself with its risk of emotional complications. Falling in love is the easy bit. Developing a rich emotional relationship with your partner may be uncomfortable, indeed you may have a succession of superficial relationships. You may flirt at social gatherings, enjoying the attentions of others for your wit and lively manner. You prefer partners who have plenty to say for themselves, who may also be intelligent or at least knowledgeable, and value what you have to say too. Your approach to sex may be adventurous but cool, keeping clear of anything you feel is murky - well you might try something once out of curiosity.

Gemini is ruled by Mercury which therefore influences Venus in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Mercury in this report for further guidance as to how Venus operates in your chart.

Venus in the Fourth House

Your desire for peace at home is emphasised here. You benefit from a harmonious home environment and would do well to furnish it beautifully. If you are in a relationship you will want to make your home a comfortable nest for your partner. A loving home background is commonly indicated. Indeed, love for a parent, usually the one of the opposite sex, may be so deep that you have difficulty establishing an independent life, and no partner is able to match up to the qualities of the parent. The same parent of the same sex may appear to be a rival for your affections, compromising that parent’s ability to be a role model for you of a mature adult. Your love of home may express itself through an interest in your family tree, or could extend to your homeland.

Venus opposite Midheaven  (Strength:  6.09)

You may have had a comfortable home background, or at least one in which there was something good to appreciate. You need a harmonious atmosphere in your own home, with tasteful furnishings as far as your income will allow. Your choice of partner could be influenced by your relationship with your father which was likely to have been close, perhaps to the extent that you need to loosen the bond with him in order to enjoy a mature relationship.

Venus square Ascendant  (Strength:  1.11)

Your primary motivation in life (Ascendant) is at odds with the part of your life where you desire peace, harmony and fun (Venus). This could lead you to behave in such a way that you obstruct your intentions. Perhaps you engage in relationships with people to whom you are not really attracted, or dress in such a way that makes it difficult to obtain what you are really looking for.

Jupiter in Virgo (Detriment)

Your Jupiter sign shows the kind of qualities you value and have faith in, whether or not you are successful in achieving them in your own life. The house occupied by Jupiter indicates an area of life where (subject to other chart factors) you can achieve success more readily than in other areas. Sometimes it may seem like good fortune or luck rather than achievement. Jupiter in aspect to a faster-moving planet generally facilitates the matters governed by that planet.

You have an appreciation of those who are painstaking in their work, who take time and care to analyse all the information they have available to come up with helpful solutions to any problems. You could be very supportive of those who keep their eyes to the ground, working on practical issues with great attention to detail, as long as they go on doing just that. What such people really need may be someone who will help them look up, to gain some inspiration, some spark which will reveal more enterprising ways of working. If you yourself take trouble over such details you are liable to proclaim yourself an expert in your chosen subject with a right to criticise anyone who does not measure up to your way of looking at things.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury which therefore influences Jupiter in your chart, especially if they aspect each other. See the description of Mercury in this report for further guidance as to how Jupiter operates in your chart.

Jupiter in the Sixth House

Your working environment is not just a setting for getting a job done. The way you do your work and your interaction with colleagues has some bigger purpose for you. Service to others and the encouragement of those with whom you work may seem like an act of faith. The refinement of your skills is not just about getting the job done more efficiently. It is about aligning yourself with a higher purpose. Howard Sasportas pointed out that in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony a tiny detail can assume cosmic importance. If you are not too busy to care for your body you might become obsessed with doing so, partaking of special diets (or fasting), regular exercise and body cleansing rituals. If you are ill you may well be able to see the condition of your body in a bigger context, assisting healing by altering your lifestyle and philosophy of life.

Jupiter conjunct Neptune  (Strength:  1.01)

Faith and meaning signified by Jupiter are linked in your life with the yearning for paradise signified by Neptune. The result is that intellectual assent and the practical working out of the implications of such assent are never enough. There has to be a mystical component as well. You wish to get caught up into the divine or whatever higher reality you believe in, such that it engages you at a deep emotional level as well. The result can be a genuine altruism, an urge to offer hospitality to any you see as suffering the misfortune of being lost in the banalities of mundane life without recourse to the vision you have. You may find that you are the recipient of similar kindness from others without apparently having earned it. Such altruism can lead you to overlook the need for the practical necessities in your own life. This may not trouble you until one day you return from ministering to those in need of your compassion to find thieves have raided your home because you forgot to shut the windows or lock the doors. This may remind you that you cannot ignore your own needs if you are to reliably serve the needs of others. Some deal with this by joining a religious community and making a vow of poverty, so that they have no goods of their own to lose anyway. You may also miss the practical necessities in the lives of others, being so convinced that spiritual healing is enough that you reject more ordinary physical methods of restoring people to health.

Saturn in Aquarius (Rulership)

Your Saturn sign shows the kind of qualities you find it a struggle to express. You may even consider them not worth the effort, or denigrate them in some way. You may attempt to cover up your inhibitions by acting out those qualities in a falsely exaggerated manner. The house occupied by Saturn indicates an area of life whose mature expression is often subject to delay and frustration. It may take most of a lifetime to learn how to live with fulfilment in that area, but the reward for doing so will be great. Saturn in aspect to a faster-moving planet generally requires that planet to work harder to achieve success in the matters governed by that planet. The result of such work could be a more mature expression of those matters.

Aquarius signifies innovation in the social order, finding ways to free the individual from subservience to rigid social structures, matters around human rights and equality, and scientific advances that benefit mankind. Saturn usually indicates some difficulty in matters connected with the sign it is in, and that is the case here. However Saturn is traditionally well placed here and offers the potential for well thought out practical application in these matters. It is especially in your younger years that you may find that you want to take a stand in these matters but fear to do so lest you stand out like a sore thumb and people abandon you, leading to loneliness. Innovations, for instance in science, may fascinate but frighten you, since they threaten the safety of entrenched positions. Another possibility is that you compensate by doing crazy things so that you stand out as someone special, or you are obsessed by revolutionary ideas. Maturity involves a carefully considered approach to social and scientific experiments, and applying your mind to ways of implementation for the benefit of all.

Saturn in the Eleventh House

You probably find close one-to-one friendships more satisfying and easier to develop than camaraderie with groups of friends or of people with shared interests. Somehow you don’t seem to fit in with the group, which may put you off joining in with communal activities. Consequently you could be something of a loner with few contacts. With individual friendships you may have a feeling of equality, with the ability to share personal experiences, whereas in a group your sense of self-esteem may be severely tested. The kinds of group associated with the 11th house are ones concerned with humanitarian causes and the opening up of restricting social structures to allow more freedom for individuals trapped within them. In your own personal life this may manifest as a satisfaction with the position you have reached in your career, but failure to realise that in reaching that position you may have limited yourself to working within clearly defined boundaries that constrain you from imagining other, more open, possibilities.

Neptune in the Sixth House

The house position of Neptune shows the area of life where you seek an experience that reaches beyond the mundane necessities of daily life. You could try to enrich those areas, exercising your imagination so that some kind of transcendent reality can shine through them. Alternatively you could choose to sacrifice earthly satisfaction in that area of life in the name of what you see as a more spiritual mode of existence. The conflict between the necessities of day to day living and the desire for something beyond it could signify difficulties for you in the matters governed by this house. Neptune in aspect to a faster-moving planet has a similar significance.

How do you feel about your body? Maybe you feel it is a limiting solid mass that holds you back from the unboundedness of spiritual life. Then you neglect it and your skin erupts because your body cannot contain what you aspire to. Having Neptune in this house suggests a reluctance to accept the mundane necessities of daily life, like having a set routine you can follow to make sure you carry out all your responsibilities. The 6th house is associated with ritual. In churches ritual is used to make the God who is described as a consuming fire accessible in a manageable way. Having Neptune in the 6th house you may need ritual to give form to what is otherwise formless, and ritual in the form of a diet and exercise routine may be necessary to maintain health. Ritual, or routines, can also be used as a defence against what may be experienced as dark forces that need to be recognised as aspects of the personality that have been suppressed. When you recognise and work with those aspects you could be an effective healer, for you see that health is more than a matter of diet and exercise. The workplace is another 6th house setting. If you have people working for you, you may be open to deception as to their reliability. You may be impatient with office routines so are not careful enough to check that staff will carry them out effectively. When others in the office make mistakes you may find yourself in the role of scapegoat for them, or maybe the victim of those errors.

Pluto in the Fifth House

The house position of Pluto shows an area of life through which any unresolved emotional conflicts within you are channelled. This can give rise to an obsession with that area and an attempt to control their expression, lest letting go releases pent-up feelings in a way that cannot be handled by the conscious mind. The obsession can have a positive outcome if it is accompanied by working towards greater self-knowledge and acceptance. Deeply ingrained complexes can find an outlet through the matters governed by this house. Matters governed by a faster-moving planet are similarly affected if in aspect with Pluto.

The 5th house covers such apparently diverse areas as creative expression, sport and games, entertainment, love affairs and children. There is more in any of these areas you are involved in than may appear superficially. If you express yourself through some form of art, then you do so partly in order to work on deeply hidden emotions that can hinder you unless allowed release in some way. This can lead to some deeply subtle art forms that are difficult for others to understand but can be transformative when they do. Subjects may include some that society regards as taboo, but which have been part of your life though you may not be aware that they are. If you engage in sport, winning could be not just about beating the competition, but also about re-establishing your power and authority when these have been subtly taken from you, probably in your family background. Gambling could be an obsession, living dangerously a way of bringing excitement into a life from which enjoyment of simple pleasures has been drained. Children can be used as pawns in a power game in a relationship. Pregnancy could be used, consciously or not, as a way of trying to keep a partner whose commitment is doubted. If the partner does leave you still have the children for comfort and companionship. Another way to keep control is to decide not to have children at all lest they remind you of trauma in your own childhood following which you have denied the child in you, and for fear they may take over your life. You could attract love affairs in which conflict and jealousy feature strongly, or sexual conquest is used as a means of feeling powerful.

House Rulers and Dispositors

We now come to the houses in your birth chart. There are twelve of these, each referring to a different area of your life. The 1st house is the Ascendant and this has already been described early in this report. Now follow the other eleven, first the so-called angular houses, the Midheaven, the Descendant and the Imum Coeli, then the remaining eight. I have already delineated the house position of each planet in your chart, and for the delineation of any house, planets within it are the most important factors. However, each house is also ruled by a planet which will not normally be within it. For each house following I will specify its ruling planet. The house in which that planet resides indicates how the affairs of the house it rules might turn out.

For instance, if the ruler of the Midheaven or 10th house (activities in the world) is in the 5th (entertainment, children etc.), then your career might involve working in the entertainment industry or with children. If it does not you might consider it as an option. If the ruler of the 2nd house (money, possessions) is in the Descendant or 7th, your financial affairs will be influenced (for good or ill) by your partnerships or relationships. For each house, check again the delineation already given above for its ruler. This will tell you how the affairs of that house might turn out.

Capricorn Midheaven (10th House)

The Midheaven is the highest point in the birth chart, where the Sun is at midday. The sign in which it falls and planets in the 10th house signify the way you reach out into the world and the kind of activities that could be appropriate for you therein. Such activities do not necessarily constitute your career, but ideally they would be included within it. (For consideration of your career direction the Ascendant, its ruler, the Sun, the Moon and the 10th house are all relevant.) The greater the number of planets in the 10th house of your birth chart, especially if the Sun is one of them, the more frustrated you will feel if you do not have significant activity outside of your home and family environment. If family commitments tie you, then you might give some consideration to ways of rearranging them so that you do have opportunities for activities beyond them. Your experience of your mother may be shown by this house.

You prefer a role in which you know where the boundaries of responsibility are, or in which you can set them yourself and work with people who are content to act within them. You take pride in acting responsibly, carrying out your duties to the best of your ability.

Capricorn is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by Saturn.

Libra Descendant (7th House)

Opposite the Ascendant, the Descendant indicates your experience of yourself in relation to another person. Usually it begins as the way in which you experience the other person, and the kind of person to whom you are attracted (but note there are many other indicators of this in the chart). The sign on the Descendant and any planets in the 7th house show qualities you look for in another person. They may be qualities, desirable or otherwise, that you repeatedly find in people to whom you are attracted. As a general rule they are traits within you that may be undeveloped or of which you are unaware, and the relationship gives you an opportunity to wake up to them.

Among the qualities you find attractive in other people are a peaceable nature, beauty and an instinct for fair play. Such people can provide a balance for a certain impulsive drive in your own life. They can help you realise that getting what you want can lead to loneliness if you do not take others along with you, or at least take account of their wishes.

Libra is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by Venus.

Cancer IC (4th House)

Opposite the Midheaven this is the lowest point in the birth chart, where the Sun is at midnight. The sign in which it falls and planets in the 4th house signify your experience of your home and family (in particular of your father), of your soul and most personal space, that without which you cannot reach out into the world (10th house) in a satisfactory way.

You are concerned that your life should have a foundation of peace, safety and emotional contentment. Your home needs to be a place where such a foundation can be laid, and security within family life will help this. Peace within your soul will help you weather many storms in life.

Cancer is on the cusp of this house, so it is ruled by the Moon.
